A good shot but too dark in the foreground and the sunset could use a little kick.

Photoshop CS4's new Vibrance slider with a combination of of color correcting and lightening curves and layer masks followed by a quick zip through LAB mode for a final color pump brings the image back to life.

Dana
just got back from Hawaii and brought a whole slew of new pictures with him. He asked me to fix this one of the balcony at the Ohana hotel up so he could send it to the staff to thank them for the fine service. This only took about 15 minutes to touch up.

First I used the new Vibrance slider in Photoshop CS4 to enhance the sunset colors. Then a Curves adjustment layer set to screen to restore brightness to the plugged up shadows in the foreground (Katrin Eiseman shares this tip in the CS3 Video workshop CD), then another curve to adjust the color and saturation of the found buildings. Finally a Dan Margulis-inspired trip to LAB mode to give everything a pump and sharpen the image on the lightness channel.

yes, photoshop is a great software program. I have it at work - wish I could afford it at home!
