I win the tech race! My blog is now on my own domain!

Well ... actually time conquered the technology. I have successfully redirected my blog to my new domain http://www.solsistershandbags.com! Yeah!

It was pretty easy following Blogger's directions. There was even a click through to tell me exactly how to update my cname records at GoDaddy, where I bought the domain. I just hadn't waited long enough for the new cname record to update all the DNS servers before I tried the redirect. So if you want to do this... do the cname record, then wait 48 hours for it to take effect before you try the redirect from the blogger dashboard.

A little thank you needs to go out to http://twitter.com/ghozali who generously offer his help to solve the issue. Tweeps are awesome!

OK, a couple of questions: is this a pricey activity, owning your domain name? And does it have to be a website, and not a blog?

No it costs about $10 to register a domain name for a year. I got two for $15 or so.

You can set any kind of site ( blog or standard website or shopping cart) to redirect to another domain name. I did this for my blog for two reasons.

#1 Having your own domain name makes you appear to be more serious about your business/shop. The .blogspot.com at the end of a blogger blog tells the world you are using a free service, like having a gmail or hotmail email account. People subconsciously associate "free" with cheap or shoddy and take you a little less seriously than if you invest the $10 to have your own domain name.

#2 If your blog ends in .blogspot.com instead of your own domain name, all that work you are doing to bring traffic to your blog is bumping up bloggers domain name, not yours, so you won;t come up as high in search engines as if you had your own domain name.

I am still publishing on the blogger platform it just APPEARS that I am on my own site. Sometimes the "appearance" is all that counts to shift perceptions in subtle ways that benefit your business. Thsi is a perfect example of that principle in effect.
